Keurig for Cocktails – WTF?

I admit to being a Keurig coffee fan. The machine has its weaknesses (plastic pods, semi-limited selection of coffees, etc.) but overall I love being able to have a FRESH cup of coffee within one minute. We can argue about price but when we are collectively willing to pay $4 or more per cup at Starbucks the 70 cents or so for a home brewed / in pajamas coffee is pretty reasonable. All that being said, Keurig now thinks it’s a good idea for us to get a machine to make cocktails for us. Really? What’s the up side to this?

Here’s a link to TheVerge’s review of Keurig’s ‘Drinkworks Home Bar by Keurig‘ and I think it’s nearly the worst idea I’ve seen related to drinking alcohol in a long time. Here’s why:

  • Price – $299 for the machine and $4 per drink
  • “More realistic” – What does it mean when the manufacturer recommends adding ice to make the drink taste more realistic?
  • What are you gaining? – Supposedly making drinks is “time consuming and messy” according to its maker. I don’t buy it.

Redeeming qualities?

  • For someone who doesn’t know how to make a drink or isn’t particular about brands this might work out. Because if you don’t understand how a good liquor brand contributes to the taste of a cocktail then pretty much anything will do.
  • Also there are supposed to be 24 different recipes available so if one were wanting to experiment with drinks they haven’t had before they could whip up something new every day for 3+ weeks.

I’m obviously not a believer in this device. At some point I’m likely to give it a try and even publish a review. But I enjoy the process of developing a drink, experimenting with brands of liquor that I understand outside the premixed capsules, and while $4 per drink isn’t bad compared to what I’d pay at a bar it’s definitely  more than my cost at home.

Have you tried this? Any opinions?
