Cigar Box Guitars – Something New (to me)
So I got a cigar box guitar, otherwise referred to as CBG. Its a pre-built small form 3-string guitar with no frets. That means it’s to be used with a slide. I strung it up and tuned it to an open G (GDG) and truthfully, it’s hard to make any mistakes playing it. But not content with just slides, I had to build another. This one, which I’ve dubbed #1, has a longer neck, still 3 strings, and frets. I’m still tinkering with the string height (it’s a little high right now) but it’s definitely playable with both a slide and fingering frets.
There’s a lot to like about these seemingly simple instruments. And i particularly like that there are ‘no rules’ to making these. So my plan is to finish up #1 and make more. Some are likely to be available for sale (once I get them in good enough shape that someone might want to buy them).
If you’re a CBG enthusiast, let me know. Let’s share some example and collab on some designs.
