The Most Popular Drinks in Tennessee
The world has no shortage of alcoholic beverages: beers, wines, scotch, bourbon, hard liquor – way too many. This, naturally, makes it really difficult to narrow it down to the best ones, because who wants to waste their time on a bad drink? But that is no matter – we’ve found the most popular alcoholic beverages of Tennessee, so you don’t have to.
1. Beer
Tennessee’s top two best rated beers are both Imperial Stouts, an extremely dark variety of beer that is best characterized by its intense malted and roasted flavours, and the occasional tone of a dark fruit, like raisin or fig, and chocolate. Stouts usually aren’t too bitter, but some varieties have a medium bitterness to them.
2. Wine
The most popular wines in Tennessee come from two specific types of grape: muscadine and concord. Muscadine grapes are grown down south, with major markets in Tennessee and Louisiana, and the wine they produce doesn’t age, so you’d best drink it quickly. Concord grapes are versatile, and give many different wines: dark, full-bodied ones, medium red ones, and lighter blushed ones, but down in Tennessee, they love them all.
3. Bourbon & Scotch
You can’t go wrong with a good old-fashioned Old Fashioned when you’re in Tennessee. Made with Tennessee Whiskey instead of any other old bourbon or scotch, it’s got an authentic, local taste to it. And it’s sweeter too.
4. Hard Liquor
Okay, no, do we really need to go over this? It’s whiskey, people; let there be no doubt about it. Nothing screams Tennessee more than a glass of locally made whiskey after a hard day at work. Sure, you can do fancy things to it, throw in some syrup and lemonade and cola and all that jazz, but why not keep it simple?
5. Cocktails
And finally, the cocktails. Well, as has been said, they love their whiskey in Tennessee, so it only makes sense that their most popular cocktails are going to include it in one way or another. There’s the Lynchburg Lemonade, made for the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee – where it all started. It’s tangy and light, and there’s a variant that calls for a dash or two of bitters, just to mix things up a little. A tribute to Johnny Cash, the Jack in Black is another popular cocktail in Tennessee, made for the musical legend. A combination of whiskey (Tennessee whiskey, of course), coffee liqueur and cola, it’s got quite the taste to it.
